Cultivating Calm and Wellness Through the Patience of Growth

Patience is a virtue, human being’s excellence of inner character, a steady and peaceful quality that we admire from afar but may struggle to embody in our fast-paced world. In our culture of instant gratification, where everything from social media to self-improvement programs promises quick results, patience might feel like an impossible feat. However, when we explore the true essence of patience, we see that it’s not a passive virtue but an active force. Patience isn’t just about waiting for things to happen; it’s about growing, trusting, and aligning with a life of wellness and calm.

This understanding of patience transforms how we approach everything, from personal goals to relationships and self-care. Growth, after all, is rarely linear or predictable. By cultivating patience, we allow ourselves to embrace each moment as it unfolds, appreciating every small step and setback as part of a larger, meaningful journey.

I’ve come to see patience not as a quiet or passive quality, but as a powerful force in my life. In a world that’s always rushing, pushing, and wanting instant results, patience can seem like something we admire but don’t quite know how to practice. But as I’ve learned in my own journey, patience is far from passive. It’s a conscious act, a choice to engage with each stage of growth, and to trust the process, even when the way forward isn’t crystal clear.

Recently, I shared in a reel, “Trusting your process isn’t passive; it’s an active act.”  That perspective was born from my own journey, especially through the years I’ve dedicated to yoga and building a life rooted in wellness. These experiences taught me that growth doesn’t happen overnight. It’s not a straightforward path or a race. True growth requires patience; the kind of patience that lets you embrace every high, every low, and every in-between with a sense of calm and trust.

Finding Patience in My Yoga Journey

When I started my first yoga teacher training in 2019, I had no idea how much time, energy, and commitment it would truly take. I was drawn to yoga’s philosophy of mindfulness and balance, but the journey itself taught me so much more about patience than I expected. That training was just the beginning; I didn’t stop there. By 2022, I was doing my second training, diving deeper into my practice and my understanding of yoga’s teachings.

It took a lot of time, effort, and yes, financial investment. There were moments I wondered if I was behind somehow or if I should have been further along by now. But every day, I learned to remind myself: patience is an active choice. I had to trust that each step, each breath, each pose; even when it felt challenging was part of my growth. The moments of struggle, the learning curves, the “am I really doing this?” questions; all of it was helping me build something meaningful.

Building a Brand with Patience

Patience also played a major role when I started my social media page. Instead of using my own name, I launched it as a brand from day one. I wanted the page to be more than just a personal account; I wanted it to reflect something bigger than myself, a place where I could share wellness insights that resonate with others. Starting as a brand wasn’t easy, though. There were times I doubted the decision, especially when growth was slow, or when I compared my progress to others.

In the early days, it sometimes felt like I was moving forward alone in the dark, unsure of where this path would lead. But as I kept going, I learned to embrace the slow growth and to trust that each step had a purpose. Building a brand aligned with my values, rather than chasing quick results, required the patience to grow at a natural pace. Patience taught me that things don’t need to happen all at once; sometimes, the slow burn is what leads to something lasting and meaningful.

The Intersection of Patience and Resilience

One of the most important lessons patience taught me was resilience. Trusting my process showed me that it’s okay not to have all the answers right away. Life and growth; is rarely a straight line. Patience allowed me to detach from the need for perfect outcomes, and resilience helped me keep going, even when things didn’t turn out as I had hoped.

In my journey, I’ve faced challenges, made mistakes, and even experienced moments of humiliation. I once thought patience was something calm and gentle, but I learned that it can be a fierce strength that lets you keep moving, keep growing, even when things are hard. Patience and resilience work together, my true friends, helping me navigate life’s twists and turns with a calm heart.

Through resilience, I also learned the importance of detachment; not detachment as in not caring, but detachment in releasing control over every single outcome. I used to think that growth was all about getting results, but I learned that sometimes the most meaningful growth comes from the process itself, from being fully present even when the path is uncertain.

Discovering Inner Strength and Virtues Along the Way

Patience has also introduced me to qualities I didn’t know I had and that I need to strengthen. I think we often talk about virtues like resilience, compassion, and humility as if they’re things you can just acquire. But I’ve learned that these are qualities you grow into, step by step, with each challenge, each setback, and each moment of patience.

Through patience, I discovered the power of self-acceptance. I used to be so hard on myself, feeling like I needed to meet certain expectations or reach specific goals. But patience has taught me to love where I am right now, even if I’m still on the way to where I want to be. This mindset is at the heart of what I believe holistic wellness is all about. It’s not about some perfect version of health or calm; it’s about embracing the journey, accepting ourselves fully, and trusting that each day we’re growing in the direction we need to.

Breathing Techniques to Cultivate Patience and Calm

Over the years, I’ve found that breathwork helps me stay grounded and cultivate a calm, patient mindset. Here are a few techniques that have helped me, and I hope they help you too:

  1. Diaphragmatic Breathing (Belly Breathing): This is my go-to when I need to center myself. I place one hand on my belly and take slow, deep breaths. Feeling the rise and fall of my belly reminds me to ground myself in the moment.

  2. 4-7-8 Breathing: I love this technique because it naturally slows my breath, helping me feel calm and focused. I inhale for a count of four, hold for seven, and exhale for eight. This rhythm brings me back to myself and reminds me to stay present.

  3. Box Breathing: This one’s perfect when I feel overwhelmed. I inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four, and pause for another four. This even rhythm is like a mental reset, helping me find clarity and patience when I need it most.

  4. Alternate Nostril Breathing: This practice is incredible for balance and calm. By breathing in through one nostril and out through the other, I feel a sense of harmony within myself, which helps me approach challenges with patience.

Breathwork grounds me, helping me reconnect with my own sense of calm and patience. I’ve found that, like patience, it takes practice. But every time I sit down, breathe, and slow down, I’m reminded that growth doesn’t need to be rushed.

Embracing the Journey of Growth and Wellness

Now, when I think about growth, I see it as an ongoing journey; one that unfolds at its own pace, with its own timing. Wellness, I’ve learned, isn’t a goal to reach. It’s a way of living, a daily practice of patience, resilience, and compassion. I’ve come to see that wellness is about more than taking care of our bodies; it’s about nurturing a mindset that embraces each moment, each breath, and each stage of growth.

As I reflect on the path I’ve traveled, I keep coming back to the words I shared: “Trusting your process isn’t passive. It’s an active act.” Each day, I choose to trust the process, to honor the pace of my growth, and to embrace both the challenges and the moments of ease. Patience has taught me that there is beauty in taking things slow, in allowing ourselves to be exactly where we are.

So if you’re reading this and feeling like you’re behind or wondering when you’ll “get there,” know that you’re not alone. Growth isn’t a race, and calmness isn’t a destination. Every moment is a chance to breathe, to trust, and to keep moving forward with patience. Embrace your journey and let it unfold naturally; step by step, with all the beauty and calmness that comes from growing at your own pace. 🌱
